598 - Tony MacAlpine Edge of Insanity 1986

MacAlpine was certainly "fleet-fingered on the fretboard" -- in other words, he could solo extremely fast over a heavy metal accompaniment. MacAlpine has issued albums on a somewhat regular basis over the years (save for 1987-1991). The title track from his 1986 solo debut, "Edge of Insanity" (which saw MacAlpine backed by a highly skilled rhythm section -- bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Steve Smith) is a great track everyone interested in music should enjoy.

Tony Jeff MacAlpine is an American guitarist and keyboardist. He is best known as a solo guitarist although he has worked with many different bands and musicians like Planet X, Steve Vai, Vinnie Moore, Mark Boals and Vitalij Kuprij.
Tony MacAlpine 's style of playing is surprisingly tone-oriented, with excellent vibrato, bends and expertly used artificial harmonics, left and right. Every song has a distinct 80's sound to it, which is characterized by Tony's tone, drenched in reverb and distortion, but generally sounding smooth rather than harsh. The track "Tears of Sahara" keeps this trend.
