Mekong Delta emerged on the metal scene as a mystery band, with the story being that the members were under contract to other bands and thus could not reveal their true identities. The music of Mekong Delta is best described as Germanic thrash, with strong progressive and classical tendencies. When they're at their best they are almost untouchable, though at other times the arrangements are a bit too chaotic.
Björn Eklund, Gordon Perkins, Rolf Stein, Vincent St. Johns and Keil are the five men to record the self-titled album 'Mekong Delta', produced by Ralf Hubert himself. For the shortly thereafter following Picture Disc "The Gnome", Jörg Michael was replaced by Patrick Duval (Uli Kusch) because he was touring with his current band. After a year of complete silence, Ralf and his men return to the studio around newyear '87/'88, and record the concept album 'The Music Of Erich Zann', with the same line-up and again produced by Ralf. After finishing the album, Reiner Kelch leaves the group because of differences with the other members. Due to, or because of, the mystery (there are no pictures of the band at that time, everyone is using a false name, and there have been no live performances), the band's big breakthrough stays out.
Following the conventions of its precedessor, Mekong Delta's second release "The Music Of Erich Zann" was also something of a concept album, this time deriving inspiration from HP Lovecraft's classic horror tales. The production is razor sharp and slightly more refined than on the band's debut. While the first three tracks alone are prime examples of technical thrash metal of the highest order, this album on the whole sounds a bit less coherent than the band's debut, especially towards the end. Whereas the sound of Mekong Delta was somewhat more organic and physical with a slight rough edge, "The Music Of Erich Zann" has almost a clinical approach.
