57 - Soundgarden Jesus Christ Pose 1991

Chris Cornell formed Soundgarden in 1985 and over the course of 12 years the group established themselves as one of the most influential rock bands of the nineties, selling over 20 million records worldwide. Soundgarden was one of the key bands in the creation of grunge, a musical style that developed in Seattle based around their record label Sub Pop. "Jesus Christ Pose" appears on their 1991 album Badmotorfinger. Many listeners were outraged by the song and its video, perceiving it as anti-Christian. The band actually received death threats about it on a UK tour in the early 1990s. Actually, the song is a criticism of how public figures use religion (particularly the image of Jesus Christ) to portray themselves as being 'better' than others, or as 'martyrs'.
