Hawkwind are a British rock band, one of the earliest space rock or space metal groups. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. Notable fantasy and science fiction writer Michael Moorcock was an occasional collaborator. In 1971, Lemmy joined the band. He had little experience as a bass guitarist, but quickly developed a distinctive style that was strongly shaped by his early experience as a rhythm guitarist, often using double stops and chords rather than the single notes preferred by most bassists. His bass work was a fundamental part of the Hawkwind sound during his tenure. He also provided lead vocals on a number of songs, including the band's biggest UK chart single, "Silver Machine",
The music of "Silver Machine" was composed by Dave Brock who used his then wife Sylvia Macmanus' maiden name for credits in order to put pressure on his publishing company to improve his deal. The verse is an 8-bar Rock and Roll boogie whose riff is an adaption of the standard riff that can be heard on the likes of Johnny and the Hurricanes' "Red River Rock".
