Resolving the doubts of the "October" period, U2 released "War" in 1983. A record where the band "turned pacifism itself into a crusade", "War"'sincerity and "rugged" guitar was intentionally at odds with the "cooler" synthpop of the time. Written about the Polish Solidarity movement, "New Year's Day" is driven by Adam Clayton's distinctive bassline and The Edge's keyboard playing. It was the band's first UK hit single.
