1593 - Ophis Suffering is a Virtue 2010

Solitude Productions’ slew of ‘melancholic’ and ‘gothic’ death/doom can often become tiresome to sort through, but it certainly is made worthwhile when something like Ophis’ newest record is on the table. Having released their debut "Stream of Misery " three years ago, the North German group from Hamburg established themselves as another propagator of the cold, dark, almost mechanical death/doom trend.
The bellowed roar of the vocals may not be anything special, but the real beauty of this band's music comes from the guitars of front-man Richard Kruppa and guitarist Fred Winkler, which are discordantly down-tuned, either providing a repetitive yet evolving backdrop for the vocals or creating a slow yet discordant harmony to contrast with the down-beat rhythm.
There are plenty of highlights across this album, including the beautiful clean guitar introduction to 'Suffering is a Virtue', the latter of which is abruptly forced into distortion by the re-introduction of Kruppa's bellowed vocals and strained screams.
