These five Swedish musicians are known for their songs based on Norse mythology. This is an element that originally emerged as a sub-genre of black metal known as viking metal in the early 1990s. When asked to comment on the band's genre, vocalist Johan Hegg remarked: "We play death metal. We write about Vikings therefore some refer us to Viking metal, but I have no idea what that is. I can't imagine the Viking’s veer into metal at all except on the swords and stuff. And musically, I guess they only played these strange lip instruments and some bongos or whatever". "Once Sent from the Golden Hall" is the first full-length studio album released by the band.The epic battle song “Victorious March” is definitely an excellent head banging tune.

183 - Amon Amarth Cry Of The Black Birds 2006

Viking metal is used to describe a band's lyrical content rather than on the music itself. "With Oden On Our Side" is Amon Amarth's sixth full-length release. "Cry Of The Black Birds"´s introduction is very slow and weak, until it just explodes with Johan Hegg yelling "Attack!". Amazing drumming, guitar, hell every instrument is going at full capacity. Then we get to probably the most epic portion of the entire album, the extremely powerful chorus. The guitars are doing insane speeds on single strings, the drums have immense intensity and along Johan's powerful vocals it just makes it all that much better. This song simply tells the story of men charging into battle with no fear. Completely amazing track.

Around the year 500 A.D. the Vikings set sail to conquer new lands, leaving nothing but death and destruction in their wake. 15 centuries later, Amon Amarth, their heirs from Sweden, are repeating history with guitars as their weapons and melodic death metal as their battle cry....“Pursuit Of Vikings” is a very catchy song with growl along refrain, good guitar melodies, pounding drums and Hegg’s unmistakeable growls.
