1498 - Death Low Life 1990

"Spiritual Healing" marked Death's transistion from raw, riff-heavy, gore filled brutality to a more cerebral and melodic/progressive sound with more socially relevant topics. With Scott Burns' trademark recording, Chuck Schuldiner's brilliant lyrics, and James Murphy's signature tone and incomparable soloing ability, this is easily one of Death's best efforts. One of the most impressive solo parts is the tradeoff between the two guitarists in 'Low Life'. Intrincate rhythms and amazing Schuldiner on the voice too.

1354 - Death Zombie Ritual 1987

"Scream Bloody Gore" is the debut album by American band Death, released in 1987 and considered “the first true death metal record”. Chuck Schuldiner plays bass, wrote all the songs on the album and provides vocals in addition to guitar for the album. John Hand is noted on the cover as playing rhythm guitar, though this was incorrect and Hand was only in the band for a short period and was not on the recording. This is also the only Death album to feature drummer Chris Reifert, who had joined for the Mutilation demo. "Zombie Ritual", "Mutilation" and "Land of No Return" originally appeared on the Mutilation demo. The combination of early death metal, punk/thrash influenced riffs and a great vocal performance lead to tracks like "Zombie Ritual", inspired by "Zombie", film directed by Italian director Lucio Fulci, being some of the catchiest death metal songs.

1003 - Death Crystal Mountain 1995

"Symbolic" is the sixth album by American death metal band Death. Chuck changed his vocals to more screaming and thus getting them to what they will sound three years later at a steady and slow pace. It includes immortal songs like "Crystal Mountain".

805 - Death Spirit Crusher 1998

"The Sound of Perseverance" sees the fruits of the band´s labor come full force, yet sadly it would be the last recording Death would make. The bass does some great stuff. For a death metal band, Scott Clendinon strays from root notes, and moves in and out of fills and time signature making the bass an excellent listen. "Spirit Crusher" is a death classic.

747 - Death Scavenger of Human Sorrow 1998

The album "Sound of Perseverance" kicks off with “Scavenger Of Human Sorrow” and we have a tidy drum solo and nice guitar licks. The song fastens and the vocals really worth a mention; fucking extreme and raspy but with a quote of sharpness. This song is addressed to Beatrice, la belle dame sans merci, the mistress of DEATH.

465 - Death Altering the Future 1990

Death's third album, "Spiritual Healing" was released in 1990 and marked yet another change in the bands legendary career. After countless line-up changes throughout their young career, Death had always seemed to be walking a tight-rope but the excellent songwriting and determination of the man who essentialy was the band, Chuck Schuldiner had alwasy pulled them through. Different to preivous releases, "Spiritual Healing" was less gore in the lyrics, the music was a little less brutal and it was, well, more musical. The songs are still heavy though, a little more diverse than previous releases though. "Altering The Future" starts with a slow, almost doomy riff. Followed by a weird set of notes, with an inversed drum beat which gives a good feeling, before going into a more straightforward, "headbangable" drumbeat and riff.

246 - Death Left to Die 1988

Even before the evil vibes of the 1987 debut, "Scream Bloody Gore", had been absorbed, Death spawned another evil piece of mayhem: "Leprosy". It is enforced by well structured songs, containing elements that were inspired by bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest; fast, melodic solos, and heavy riffs with groove and speed. The tracks are more epic, more melodic and less primitive than displayed on their debut. The solos of Chuck Schuldiner and Rick Rozz have quite a different approach, whereas Rick spills his guts in some Slayer-like maniac manner, Chuck shows a more melodic and structured approach, yet keeping it aggressive as could be. "Left to Die" is one of the outstanding tracks on the album.

121 - Death Spiritual Healing 1990

Death had progressed impressively from their crude death metal origins circa 'Scream Bloody Gore' and 'Leprosy' and by 1990 were moving in the same territory as stiffs like Obituary. Rick Rozz was replaced by a guy named James Murphy who was still skinny and unknown in 1990 and would later also make name for himself with Obituary, Cancer and Testament and some others as well. Murphys solos are a huge improvement as they could compete with Schuldiner with ease, making the interaction worthwhile to listen to. The guitar work on this album is most impressive. The riffs on "Spiritual Healing" are amazing, complex and original. Chuck and James deliver long rolling riffs that don't take a back seat to the vocals or drums on this album at almost all times.

27 - Death Lack of Comprehension 1991

Very few bands have albums that will live on far past their time. "Human" takes the whole Death Metal genre to new heights. Chucks Schuldiner´s riffs and leads are savant, ripping and make one want to just plain freak out! The album is musically advanced and lyrically complex. Blasting songs like "Suicide Machine" and "Lack of Comprehension" is almost a spiritual awakening for many. The sheer impact of the music hitting you is enough to make you stop an allow the songs to absorb you and your attention.
