A far more straightforward album than the following Skunkworks, Balls To Picasso is a good album with some great songs. Bruce himself puts in an excellent, heartfelt performance that upgrades the songs with the quality that his voice always brings, and the various blues, Latin and reggae influences brought by Roy Z and the rest of the backing band are a welcome breath of fresh air. Tears of the dragon is a hard rock ballad with an absolutely stunning refrain and such a powerful solo, all part of his rock-side inside him.

With Maiden taking a break after their tour in support of "Dance of Death" wrapped up, Dickinson was finally left with enough time to work on his first solo recording in seven years. Hooking up once more with co-collaborator, guitarist, and producer Roy Z, "Tyranny of Souls" signals Dickinson's solo return. "Navigate The Seas Of The Sun" is a seemingly soft song yet quite heavily filled with meanings only Dickinson knows how to "place" within his lyrics so elegantly.

"Accident Of Birth" is one of those rare and really special highlights in the history of classic Heavy Metal. Bruce's solo career was highly successful with many great albums, this one being his best. It has all the elements needed for making a most phenomenal record. With Adrian Smith at his side you could expect a lot of Iron Maiden influences in the songs, and it is not wrong to say that there are some.
The brilliant gloomy "Darkside Of Aquarius" slowly builds from a quiet bass melody with guitar harmonies, into a heavy riff that really sets the song into pace. The many different passages, especially the twin lead guitar parts really come together in a spellbinding way.
